MARIANIST URBAN STUDENTS PROGRAM (MUSP) |

In 1992, the Cincinnati Province of the Society of Mary chose to invest in the future of Marianist urban high school students. According to the Marianist philosophy, the Marianist Urban Students Program was designed with a holistic approach to the education of the child – spiritual, social, academic, cultural and financial. Purcell Marian was the first site of the Marianist Urban Students Program.
The mission of the program is to assist students and their families to achieve success in their education within the Christian atmosphere of an urban high school. The program director supports students from St. Francis de Sales in their quest to maximize their potential at Purcell Marian High School. Efforts are made to strengthen the communication with the family and the school. Some of the means utilized by the directors are:
| * Providing ongoing support of each student |
| * Monitoring academic grades and school attendance |
| * Providing weekly academic coaching |
| * Arranging quarterly conferences and/or home visits with parents |
| * Planning monthly enrichment activities to broaden the context of students’ lives |
| * Initiating regular conferences with school staff |
| * Providing necessary assistance with outside social agencies |
| * Exploring college and career opportunities with students |
Students within the program have attended St. Francis de Sales Elementary School and are currently enrolled as students at Purcell Marian High School . Each year, five or six eighth graders from St. Francis de Sales are selected, via a detailed application process, to be participants in the program. With hard work and dedication, participants remain in the program for their four years here at Purcell.
Within the program, students receive tuition assistance, participate in enrichment activities, work with the director in academic coaching and goal-setting, and explore many other learning and service opportunities! We also work on test preparation, college applications, job searches, and much more! Over the four years, MUSP students and parents form a family with each other.
