21 Questions

1. Tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to Purcell Marian.

I had worked in corporate and wanted a change.  I was born in Mexico City.  My father is American, and my mother is Mexican.  Growing up in the States, I always advocated for my mom, who, although she knew English, spoke with a thick Mexican accent, and therefore people at times did not understand what she was saying.  I always told myself and my family that I wanted to help those who were in the US but struggling with the American language and culture.

Eight years ago, I left corporate and decided I needed a change, and I knew I wanted to work in a school and with Spanish-speaking people.  That summer, I worked at Su Casa where I worked with mainly Spanish speaking students and parents.  I realized then that is what I wanted to do.  One thing led to another, and one of the teachers I worked with mentioned Purcell Marian and an opportunity for a Spanish teacher / Hispanic Coordinator, and here I am!

9. Is there a moment with a student or family that has stayed with you and reminded you why this work matters?

Yes, every day.  It could be a smile in the hallway, a hug from a parent/student or an invitation to drop off a student with their family on their first day of college who has recently graduated from Purcell Marian.

13. What is one misconception about Hispanic families or students that you wish more people understood?

I wish people understood that not talking doesn’t mean you don’t want to be part of a conversation; it could mean you don’t understand due to a language barrier.
