PURCELL MARIAN NAMES GUY “BEAR” BARATTIERI FIELD AT STAUBACH STADIUM

May 29, 2023

Purcell Marian High School is proud to announce the naming of Guy “Bear” Barattieri Field at Staubach Stadium.

Barattieri was a 1988 graduate of Purcell Marian and helped lead the Cavalier football program to an undefeated season and a state championship in 1986. Tragically, Barattieri made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Iraq.

“This tribute reflects Guy Barattieri’s profound impact and unwavering dedication throughout his extraordinary military career and beyond,” said Andy Farfsing ’95, Principal/CEO. “The decision to name the field after Guy reflects our deep appreciation for his service and sacrifice. It is a fitting honor for a man who embodied the principles and values that Purcell Marian strives to instill in our students.”

After graduating from Purcell Marian, Barattieri attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1992. He served on active duty and, in 1997, became a Green Beret. In 2000, Barattieri transferred his commission to the National Guard and joined the Seattle Police Department.

In 2002, Barattieri’s guard unit was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his combat achievements. In 2004, Guy accepted a job as a contractor providing private security for organizations in Iraq. Barattieri died on October 4, 2006 after suffering wounds when his convoy hit a roadside bomb in Baghdad.

He is survived by his wife Laurel, daughters Rees and Odessa. Guy was the son of Guy, Purcell '60 and Pat, St. Mary '60. His sisters were also Purcell Marian graduates, Gina ’90, Rebecca ’95, and Nicole ’98.

Staubach Stadium is a first for the school in its 95-year history. Guy “Bear” Barattieri Field will be home to Cavalier football, cheerleading, girls softball, and boys and girls soccer. Purcell Marian will dedicate the stadium on Friday, August 18, when the football team hosts Deer Park.
